In this article, we explore four well-known math learning options in Canada, comparing their teaching methods, costs, flexibility, and target age groups. This will help you make a more informed decision based on your child’s individual needs and learning style.

Which math tutoring program in Canada is the best fit for your child? In this article, we compare Kumon, Spirit of Math, Scholars, and IXL in terms of teaching methods, costs, and how well each program meets students’ learning needs.

“Should I enroll my child in Kumon or Spirit of Math?” “Is IXL really effective?” “Has anyone had a good experience with Scholars?” If you’re a member of Iranian parent groups in Canada, you probably see these questions almost every week. The short answer is that the best option depends on your goals and your child’s personality, not on how popular the brand is.

Many of us grew up with the rigorous, practice-based approach to math used in Iranian schools. So when we see that our child is still struggling with multiplication facts in Grade 5, or that their math homework focuses more on “explain how you got your answer,” we start to worry.

Math education in Canada isn’t weak, but the approach is different: it places greater emphasis on conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and explaining mathematical reasoning, with less repetitive practice in school. Math tutoring can help bridge this gap, provided you choose the right program.

A common mistake is choosing a brand first and then figuring out whether it meets our needs. Each of these programs is designed for a specific purpose. Before enrolling your child, honestly ask yourself which of the following they need:

Think about your child’s personality, too. A child who gets tired of repetition may not stick with a practice-heavy program. A child who becomes anxious in competitive situations may lose confidence in a fast-paced, competitive class.

is a Japanese learning program built around daily worksheets. Children start at a level slightly below their current ability and move on only when they can complete the work from the previous level accurately and quickly. They typically visit a center twice a week and spend about 30 minutes practicing at home on the other days. Kumon does not follow provincial school curricula; it follows its own learning path.

Spirit of Math: Enrichment for Strong Math Students

is a Canadian organization headquartered in the Toronto area. It describes itself as an “after-school math school” for strong and gifted students rather than a tutoring service. Classes run throughout the school year, and admission involves an interview or assessment. The classroom environment is fast-paced and challenging, and students also participate in national and international competitions.

Scholars: Tutoring Aligned with the School Curriculum

is a Canadian tutoring company that has been operating since 1999, with approximately 90 centers across Canada. It serves students from preschool through Grade 12 and offers tutoring in reading, writing, French, and science in addition to math. Its program aligns with provincial curricula and begins with an initial assessment.

is an online learning platform whose exercises are aligned with the curricula of several Canadian provinces, including Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba. Children practice individual skills until their “SmartScore” reaches 100, while parents can track their progress through reports. Many schools also use IXL.

If you want your child to follow a structured learning plan,

can also be a great source of motivation. These include

, such as Gauss and Pascal. Participating in these competitions generally does not require enrollment at a particular tutoring center.

Reassess after two or three months. If your child has lost interest in math, keeps making excuses to avoid it, or struggles emotionally with homework, these may be signs of burnout. In that case, changing programs or taking a short break may be better than forcing them to continue.

Conclusion: Which Option Is Best for Your Child?

If your goal is to improve calculation speed and build consistent study habits, try Kumon. If your child is strong in math and wants more challenging work, Spirit of Math is a serious option. For help catching up with schoolwork, Scholars or a suitable private tutor may be a better fit. If you simply want affordable extra practice, IXL or Khan Academy may be enough.

Some families also prefer working with a teacher they can speak to in Persian about their child’s progress.

for students of all ages, taught by Persian-speaking teachers familiar with the Canadian curriculum. It also offers preparation courses for the Math Kangaroo competition.

Spirit of Math:
